‘White vest squared’ or the extended security check

Recently, we already discussed why a police clearance certificate is a basic requirement for every employee in the security industry. Today, we take it one step further – into the realm where security requirements are not only high, but critical. Enhanced security vetting is the next level when it comes to the protection of sensitive sites and particularly vulnerable areas. It is not a bureaucratic add-on, but rather a hallmark of quality, a signal of trust, and a decisive factor for access to security-relevant facilities.

What is Enhanced Security Clearance?

The Enhanced Security Clearance (Level 2) is an in-depth state vetting procedure assessing an individual’s personal reliability. It goes far beyond a standard police clearance certificate. While the police certificate merely reflects criminal records, Enhanced Security Clearance (Level 2) examines a person’s entire security-relevant environment. It becomes necessary when employees are granted access to areas where there is an increased risk of sabotage, espionage, or security-related disruption.

How do you obtain Enhanced Security Clearance?

Enhanced Security Clearance cannot be applied for privately. It is initiated exclusively by the employer or the responsible authority when the role requires it.

The process is clearly structured:

Step 1
  • Application submitted by the employer
  • The employer registers the employee and provides justification for the necessity.
  • Employee consent

No vetting takes place without written consent.

Step 2
  • Collection of data
  • Depending on the scope of the clearance, the following areas are included:
    • Identity and registration information
    • Police intelligence records
    • Constitutional protection service enquiries
    • Financial irregularities (e.g. significant debt)
    • Security-relevant contacts
Step 3
  • Assessment by the responsible authority
  • The decision is made by the security authority, not by the employer.

How long does it take?

The duration depends on the federal state and the workload of the authorities. Typical experience shows:

  • Standard: 4–12 weeks
  • With high workload: up to 4 months

Important: The vetting process only begins once all documentation has been submitted in full. Missing information can significantly delay the procedure.

How long is it valid?

The validity is generally 5 years. After that, it must be renewed if the employee continues to work in security-relevant environments. In the event of security-critical changes (e.g. criminal proceedings or financial difficulties), an early reassessment may take place.

In which facilities is Level 2 clearance relevant?

Enhanced Security Clearance (Level 2) is required wherever the state or critical infrastructure is involved. Typical deployment locations include:

  • Authorities with security-related responsibilities
  • Military facilities
  • Critical infrastructure (e.g. energy, transport, telecommunications)
  • Sensitive administrative areas
  • Sites with classified protection levels
  • Security-relevant IT and data centre environments

For security companies, this means: Without staff holding Level 2 clearance, certain contracts are simply not possible.

Why is Level 2 clearance a hallmark of quality?

From the perspective of a security company, Enhanced Security Clearance (Level 2) represents a clear competitive advantage:

  • Employees are not only reliable, but vetted for security-critical suitability.
  • Access to highly sensitive facilities becomes possible.
  • Trust among authorities and critical infrastructure operators increases.
  • Professionalism and compliance are clearly demonstrated.

For clients, Level 2 clearance is a guarantee that only individuals meeting the highest standards of integrity and reliability are deployed.

Conclusion

Enhanced Security Clearance is not merely a formal procedure, but a security standard that demonstrates how seriously a company takes its responsibility. Anyone working in sensitive environments needs not only a white vest – but a white vest squared!
